We’ve been through an unprecedented cold snap here in the Northeast. So, we checked in with a few Ecocor Passive House owners to see how their house handled the cold. Here’s what one of our customers told us.
“Now, we understand what you mean by thermal comfort. Our old house didn’t handle these artic cold fronts well. When the wind chill was -20° outside it felt like a wall of cold air was coming at us on the inside. Now, we walk around in our stocking feet. It’s wonderful!”
Most people know that drafts come from small gaps in exterior walls that wind can drive cold air through. Did you know that drafts are caused by convection inside the home, as well? When the wall components are colder than the interior air, cool air displaces the warm air causing a draft, which makes us cold.
A Passive House is well insulated and airtight. So much so that the temperature of the interior surfaces is not more than 1 °C below the indoor temperature. Since the air temperature is nearly the same as the wall components, there is no cool air to displace warm air. No drafts! This is why Passive House owners live in complete thermal comfort.
